Butter chicken, also known as murgh makhani, is a popular Indian curry made from chicken cooked in a rich, creamy tomato and butter-based gravy. It is a staple of North Indian cuisine and is renowned for its smooth, velvety texture and mild, aromatic flavor.

The sauce is a key component, made by simmering tomatoes, garlic, ginger, and butter until smooth and reduced, often thickened with cashew paste and flavored with spices such as cardamom, cumin, cloves, cinnamon, and fenugreek (kasuri methi). It is commonly garnished with fresh coriander. While traditionally made with boneless chicken, some recipes use bone-in thighs for added flavor. Butter chicken is often served with rice, naan, or other flatbreads.​
